Book Club Meeting
Book Club Discussion Meeting: Spinning Silver
What Happens Here?
Books are amazing, reading them is awesome . . . discussing them with other book lovers - EVEN BETTER! That is what the Little Shop of Magic Book Club is all about, sharing your love and interest in books with other like minded individuals. Each month the club will select a book to read to then meet the last Tuesday of the month to discuss it. This month the book is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.
What Book is Being Read this Month?
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father is not a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has left his family on the edge of poverty--until Miryem intercedes. Hardening her heart, she sets out to retrieve what is owed, and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. But when an ill-advised boast brings her to the attention of the cold creatures who haunt the wood, nothing will be the same again. For words have power, and the fate of a kingdom will be forever altered by the challenge she is issued. Channeling the heart of the classic fairy tale, Novik deftly interweaves six distinct narrative voices--each learning valuable lessons about sacrifice, power and love--into a rich, multilayered fantasy.
How are the Books Selected?
Books are chosen each month by the club members for the following month's meeting. Right now we are pulling from realms of speculative fiction. Any club member can suggest titles to be add to the selection list. We are pretty open to any ideas, if there is something you are interested in reading and discussing. Please let us know.
What Sort of Book do You Read?
We are selecting books which fall in genres under the umbrella of Speculative Fiction. Speculative Fiction is a a catch all term for fantasy, science fiction, and horror; as well as, their derivatives, hybrids, and cognate genres like the gothic, dystopia, weird fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction, ghost stories, superhero tales, alternate history, steampunk, slipstream, magic realism, fractured fairy tales, and more. It is a super category for all genres that deliberately depart from imitating “consensus reality” of everyday experience. The preference is towards stand alone novels.
I Didn't Read this Months Book, Can I Join?
While it is preferable that you have read the month's book, it is not required. If you are interested in finding out about the Book Club or would like to get going for the next month, please join us this month.
Is there an Entry Fee?
No, it is free to participate in Book Club.
Are there any Prizes?
No, there are no prizes awarded for participating in this event. However, you're talkin' books, what more could you want?
Who Can Join the Book Club?
The book club is intended for adult readers, and is open to anyone that can read and discuss books at that level. While our book choices eschew graphic contenting; topics and materials may touch upon mature themes and may not be suited for children or young adult readers.
