What is the Format?
The format for this event is Booster Draft.
What is the Tournament Structure?
- For rules enforcement, the emphasis is on teaching players the correct ways to play.
- Our Friday Night Magic series features three formats every week: Standard, Draft and Commander.
- The Draft and the Standard events run simultaneously. This means that round 2 of Standard will not start until Round 1 of Draft is finished.
- All tournaments will be comprised of 4 rounds of Swiss style play with no cut to single elimination.
What are the Prizes?
FNM specific promo cards will be given to the players that place in the top two spots in EACH tournament. One promo card will also be given away as a random prize to a player in each tournament. In addition, Magic: the Gathering booster packs will be awarded based on the following points schedule:
- 12 points: 5 packs
- 10 points: 4 packs
- 9 points: 3 packs
- 6-8 points: 1 pack
Match wins award 3 points, match losses award 0 points and matches ending in ties award 1 point.
What Is a Booster Draft?
Have a group of friends who want to enjoy playing a format together? Booster Draft is exactly the format you're looking for! Instead of just opening your cards and building a deck, you and the other players at the table (four to eight total) have to draft the cards for your decks.
At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
What is Magic: the Gathering?
In the Magic game, you play the role of a planeswalker a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers for glory, knowledge, and conquest. Your deck of cards represents all the weapons in your arsenal. It contains the spells you know and the creatures you can summon to fight for you.
Trading card games like the Magic: The Gathering TCG combine collectable cards with a strategy game. You don't know what you'll get in a Magic booster pack. You just start a collection and trade with other players to get the cards you want.
The best part about a trading card game is that it's always changing. You design and build your own unique decks, and each Magic game you play is different. New Magic expansions are released a few times a year, and each new expansion brings new ways to stupefy and defeat your opponents.
