To make it easier to participate, Friday Night Magic events are open to anyone and feature the Standard Constructed, Sealed Deck or Booster Draft formats. Running events in these formats makes it easier for new players to participate, and you only have to remember three things: Pack your Standard deck; remember how to get to our store, and what time we start the event.

Tournament Information

The DCI has teamed up with our store to give players the opportunity to play in a fun weekly event and have a shot at cool FOIL prize cards in the process. FNM is designed to keep the play style casual:

  1. FNM events are the first steps to competitive play.
  2. Prize cards are available to participants in other ways than just to the winners
  3. For rules enforcement, the emphasis is on teaching players the correct ways to play

We run Friday Night Magic every week with the exception of major holidays.

Friday Night Magic Rules

  1. 1st and 2nd place receive one prize card each.
  2. Door prize – We will randomly award the remaining two prize cards to two players that did not place first or second.
  3. FNM events are 8k tournaments and have a Regular Rules Enforcement Level (REL).
  4. We only skip FNM tournaments during major holidays, so check our events calendar in advance if you think we may be skipping FNM on the date you're planning on visiting.
  5. All 4 prize cards associated with each Friday Night Magic event must be awarded to the players.
  6. Friday Night Magic events can only be run on Fridays.

This Week's Tournament Formats: Booster Draft & Standard

What is a Booster Draft?

Have a group of friends who want to enjoy playing a format together? Booster Draft is exactly the format you're looking for! Instead of just opening your cards and building a deck, you and the other players at the table (four to eight total) have to draft the cards for your decks.

At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.

Here's a diagram of the process of passing the packs:

Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.

Each pair of players then plays a match, which consists of the best two out of three games. In the next round, the winners play against other winners (and the losers against the losers, if you like). The player who wins all three rounds—or all three matches—is the winner. It's a great way to spend a few hours with your buddies.

What is the entry fee for a Booster Draft tournament?

$15, which includes 3 packs of the most current sets in stock.

What is Standard?

The Standard format uses only the newest sets the game has to offer. The current block, the block that was released the previous October, and the most recent core set are all legal to play in a Standard deck. As you can tell from the name, Standard is the most commonly played format. Standard events are available year round at retailers and tournament venues worldwide, offering new players a great opportunity to enjoy a tournament setting with the cards they've recently purchased.

How do I construct a Standard deck?

Updated September 3, 2012

Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it must contain exactly fifteen cards.

With the exception of basic land cards, a player’s combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent. All cards named Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest are basic

The following card sets are permitted in Standard tournaments:
